May Home Maintenance Checklist

As the flowers bloom and the days grow longer, May is the perfect time to give your home a little TLC. With spring in full swing and summer just around the corner, this month is all about preparation—both inside and out.


From lawn care and outdoor cleanup to prepping your cooling systems for warmer days ahead, a little maintenance now can save you time, money, and stress later in the season. Whether you're a homeowner or a renter, staying on top of these tasks will help keep your space running smoothly and looking its best.

Exterior & Yard Care:

  • Mow the lawn regularly and edge around walkways and flower beds

  • Fertilize lawn and garden beds

  • Pull weeds and add fresh mulch

  • Inspect and clean gutters and downspouts after spring rains

  • Check the roof for missing or damaged shingles

  • Wash exterior siding and windows

  • Power wash decks, patios, and outdoor furniture

  • Seal your deck or fence if needed

Around the House:

  • Install or check screens on doors and windows (repair holes or tears)

  • Test and clean ceiling fans (switch direction to summer mode — counter-clockwise)

  • Inspect and replace weather stripping around doors/windows if worn

  • Check for signs of pests (ants, wasps, termites) around the foundation and entry points

Systems Check:

  • Service your air conditioning system before the summer heat kicks in

  • Check and replace HVAC filters

  • Flush hot water heater to remove sediment build-up

  • Test sump pump to ensure it’s working properly

  • Check hoses and faucets for leaks, especially outdoor spigots

Safety First:

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • Replenish or check your emergency kit

  • Review your home evacuation plan with family

Just for Spring:

  • Set up outdoor entertaining spaces with cushions, lighting, and décor

  • Clean and prep the BBQ for grilling season
