Prep your home for summer living (and make it shine while you’re at it)

By May, your home should be shaking off the last signs of winter and settling into a new rhythm. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and naturally, your focus starts to shift outdoors.


This is the month where maintenance meets lifestyle—where a few simple updates can make your home feel ready for everything from quiet mornings on the patio to full summer hosting mode.


If April was about cleanup, May is about setting the stage.


Outdoor Clean Up:

☐ Clean and set up patio furniture

☐ Wash outdoor cushions & rugs

☐ Clean and inspect BBQ (propane, burners, grates)

☐ Set up outdoor lighting (string lights, lanterns)

☐ Power wash deck, patio, and walkways


Lawn and Garden Care:

☐ Plant flowers, herbs, or vegetables

☐ Add fresh mulch to garden beds

☐ Begin regular lawn mowing

☐ Pull weeds before they spread

☐ Water early in the morning to conserve moisture


Exterior Maintenace Checks:


☐ Inspect deck for loose boards or needed staining

☐ Check fences and gates for winter damage

☐ Lubricate garage door tracks and hinges

☐ Re-caulk windows or doors if needed

☐ Look for signs of pests around the home


Cooling and Air Quality:

☐ Turn on and test A/C system

☐ Clean around outdoor A/C unit

☐ Replace or clean air filters

☐ Dust ceiling fans and reverse direction if needed

☐ Open windows on mild days for fresh air


Interior Refresh:

☐ Deep clean floors and carpets

☐ Swap out seasonal clothing

☐ Clean inside kitchen cabinets & pantry

☐ Check for moisture in basement after spring thaw

☐ Declutter and donate unused items
