October Home Maintenance Checklist

Oct 1
2 min read

October is the time to shift from fall maintenance to winter preparation. With colder temperatures just around the corner, taking care of a few key tasks now can help protect your home, improve energy efficiency, and prevent winter-related repairs.

Heres Your October Home Maintenance Checklist:

Clean Your Gutters & Downspouts: Once most of the leaves have fallen, give your gutters a thorough cleaning. Make sure downspouts are clear and directing water away from your foundation.

Check Your Furnace: Have your heating system serviced before you need it regularly. Replace your furnace filter and make sure your thermostat is working properly.

Inspect Windows & Doors: Check for drafts around windows and exterior doors. Replace worn weather stripping or caulking to help keep warm air inside and cold air out.

Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Test all alarms and replace batteries if needed. October is a great time to make sure your home is ready for the heating season.

Prepare Your Fireplace: If you have a wood-burning fireplace or stove, make sure the chimney and flue are clean and ready for use. Never skip a professional inspection if one is due.

Disconnect Outdoor Water: Remove garden hoses, shut off exterior water lines, and drain outdoor faucets to help prevent frozen pipes and damage.

Inspect Your Roof: Look for missing or damaged shingles, loose flashing, or other areas that could allow water into your home before winter weather arrives.

Clean Up the Yard: Clear leaves from walkways, drains, and areas around your home. Trim branches that could become a hazard during snow or winter storms.

Get Your Winter Equipment Ready: Don't wait for the first snowfall to discover your snow blower doesn't start! Check your snow blower, shovels, ice melt, and other winter essentials now.

Check Exterior Lighting: With shorter days ahead, make sure pathways, entrances, garages, and other exterior areas are properly lit.

October maintenance is all about getting ahead, a little prep goes along way! Spending a weekend preparing your home now can help you avoid unexpected problems when the temperatures drop and make those first snowy mornings a little easier.

And if you're thinking about selling your home this fall or winter, completing these maintenance tasks can also help your property make a great first impression!
