Cooler weather is here — and with winter around the corner, October is the perfect month to prepare your home for the season ahead. Use this checklist to keep your home safe, cozy, and in top shape.
Outdoors
Clean gutters and downspouts — clear out leaves and debris to prevent water backup and ice dams.
Stack and cover firewood — keep it dry and at least 20 feet away from your home.
Shut off and drain outdoor faucets — store hoses to prevent freezing and damage.
Rake leaves and compost — keep lawns healthy and prevent slippery walkways.
Check exterior lighting — replace bulbs for shorter days and darker evenings.
Inspect caulking and weatherstripping — seal gaps to keep the heat in and the cold out.
Indoors
Schedule furnace/boiler service — replace filters and make sure your heating system is winter-ready.
Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors — change batteries if needed.
Check windows and doors for drafts — use caulk or weatherstripping for efficiency.
Bring out winter gear — check boots, coats, and snow shovels before the first storm.
Reverse ceiling fans — push warm air down to save on heating costs.
Seasonal Prep
Prepare for Halloween & fall décor — check outdoor outlets and extension cords for safety.
Plan fall landscaping — plant bulbs and shrubs before the first frost.
Stock up on winter supplies — salt, sand, and snow shovels.
