January Home Maintenance Checklist

January is the heart of winter, and while most of us are focused on staying warm, it’s also a crucial time to give your home a little extra attention. Cold temperatures, snow, and increased indoor living can all put added stress on your property. A few simple maintenance checks now can help prevent costly repairs later—and keep your home safe and comfortable all season long.

Here’s your January home maintenance checklist to start the year off right.

1. Check Your Heating System

Your furnace or heat pump is working overtime in January. Replace or clean filters, listen for unusual noises, and make sure vents aren’t blocked by furniture or rugs. Proper airflow improves efficiency and lowers energy costs.

2. Inspect Windows and Doors for Drafts

Cold air sneaking in means warm air—and money—escaping. Check for drafts around windows and doors and add weather stripping or caulking where needed. Even small fixes can make a noticeable difference in comfort.

3. Keep Snow and Ice Clear

Regularly clear snow and ice from walkways, steps, driveways, and entrances to prevent slips and falls. Don’t forget to keep outdoor vents and exhaust pipes clear to ensure proper airflow from appliances.

4. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With heating systems running and windows closed, winter increases the risk of carbon monoxide buildup. Test all smoke and CO detectors, replace batteries as needed, and make sure you have alarms on every level of your home.

5. Protect Your Pipes

Freezing temperatures can lead to burst pipes. Keep cabinet doors open under sinks along exterior walls, maintain consistent indoor temperatures, and watch for signs of freezing or leaks—especially in basements, crawl spaces, and garages.

6. Clean Dryer Vents

Dryers work harder in winter, and lint buildup can be a fire hazard. Clean the lint trap after every load and check the exterior vent to ensure it’s clear and functioning properly.

7. Check the Roof and Eaves

From the ground, look for heavy snow accumulation or ice dams along your roofline. Ice dams can cause water to back up under shingles and lead to leaks. If you notice concerns, it’s best to call a professional rather than attempting removal yourself.

8. Review Your Emergency Kit

Winter storms can happen quickly. Make sure you have flashlights, batteries, blankets, salt or sand, and a fully stocked first-aid kit on hand—just in case.

A little home maintenance in January goes a long way in protecting your investment and giving you peace of mind during the coldest months. Whether you’re planning to sell this year or simply want to care for your home, staying proactive now can save time, money, and stress down the road.
